maya grace

She is grace.  A gift.  Gentle and so thoughtful.  She loves deeply and compassionately.  She is protective and nurturing.  She's funny and smart.  And she loves to make people laugh.  She gets so excited about the little things, that it is always fun to watch her face fill with delight with any surprise.  Even if it is just a sandwich cut like a gingerbread man or a wave from teenager that she knows and loves.  She's the best gift-receiver that ever lived.  She 'ooh's' and 'ahs' over things that are beautiful.  And she makes sure you know that she feels grateful and SO lucky to have received your blessing.
It's pretty fun to surprise her.

When she's comfortable and confident in her surroundings, she's goofy and weird and utterly lacks self-awareness...she just dives into whatever play she sees or imagines, and never thinks about how others might perceive her pretend voice or wild chirping sounds or authoritative play directions.
But sometimes, she's painfully shy, completely quiet, deeply sensitive and very attached.
She loves affirmation and safety.

She knows the power of words.  She had a pretty big vocabulary before most kids her age could talk. And at six years old, she really loves a great story.  In either role (listener or teller), Maya could live in a story all day long.  She knows how to use words. (This ability can be used for encouragement, persuasion, anger, manipulation, imagination, storytelling, expressions of love...)

Mostly, she uses her power well.

She's supposed to be in bed, but she came downstairs to use the restroom and wash her hands.  She stopped in front of me, stroked my hair away from my face, and kissed my forehead.

I am so grateful.

Happy Sixth Birthday, Maya.

"Sisters..."

"...Sisters
Never were there such devoted sisters."

(Creepy make-up, I know. It was 'required' for her dance recital. She looks frighteningly like her future 16 year old self. But I love their embrace in this picture. So excited and happy.)

Right now, as I type, I'm listening up the stairs.....to Maya breathlessly singing... "two different faces, but in tight places...."

She can hardly keep her voice going for all the dancing she's doing. I hear her feet thumping around.

A minute ago, as they got their pajamas on, Maya and Sophie went back and forth (about twelve times) saying, "thirsty" (Maya) and "thuh-sty" (Sophie).

It started like this...

Sophie: (from the bathroom, probably getting a dixie cup full of water) Maya, ah you thusty?
Maya: (a bit mockingly) Thusty? Sophie, do you mean thirsty?
Sophie: Yeah, thusty. Ah you thusty, Maya?
Maya: Sophie! It's THIRSTY. Say THIRSTY.
Sophie: Thusty
Maya: Thirsty
Sophie: Thusty
Maya: THIRRRRRRR... Sophie, say Thirrrrrrrrrr
Sophie: THUUUUUUUH
Maya: THIRRRRRRR... Sophie, say Thirrrrrrrrrr
Sophie: THUUUUUUUH
Maya: (sweetly condescending) goooood, Sophie. Thirrrrrrrr...
Sophie: Thuuuuuuuuh
Maya: Thirrrrrrrrr...

...and it went on like this for quite some time. Then, the song began... "Sisters, sisters..."

I'm not making this up.

But I should go send them to bed.

In second grade violin class...

...we've been spending our first few weeks "getting to know the violin" and "getting to know the bow"...separately.

We know the parts of the violin and how to put it away in its case and how to take good care of it. We practice holding the violin in shoulder position...plucking the strings, learning their names and sounds.

We've also met the bow. We've practiced carefully removing the bow from the case, tightening and loosening the horse hair, rosining the bow. We've even practiced holding the bow correctly.

But every time I see a group of second graders in the hall or at recess they ask, "Do we get to play them together yet? Can the violin and bow meet now???"

This week, one second grader raised his hand and said thoughtfully (and innocently, I should add),

"Mrs. Corbin, even though the bow and the violin have
never even met,
they've been sleeping together all this time!"

a great conversation from long ago...

...suddenly remembered.

In the hallway, a strings student, came running up to me with a hug.

student: "Oh hi Mrs. Corbin!! I love strings class!"
me: "I do too, isn't it fun? I love that I get to be a music teacher."
student: "yes....you are pretty lucky...but what are you going to do when you grow up?"

"Loot(k) Mom. Dat's Do-Do!!"

...Maya was so excited when she saw this picture on the back of a magazine at Grandma 'Go-Go's' house. "It's...it's...it's DO-DO on nair!!"

Grandma Gloria was thrilled with her 'likeness.'

"I'm Lizzing my bed"

Me: Maya, did you just use 'Liz' as a verb?

Maya: I'm Lizzing it. For Liz. It's her bed. I'm mating (making) it.

Liz my adventurous, intelligent, funny, intense, generous, and perceptive new friend from MSU came to visit us for the weekend. She's really from Southern California, staying on campus in East Lansing for the summer while she works towards her Masters in Music Ed.

Maya loved having a friend here...'sharing' her room, playing endlessly, reading books, pretending to be imaginary characters, being covered in stickers...

And in honor of her new friend, 'Liz' is now the name of Maya's 'dirl' (girl) in the doll house family. Last night, we brought Liz to meet Allie in Allendale (another friend from class). Maya's doll house is now 'Allie's house'....where Liz stayed last night.

So now, I keep hearing..."Mom, we do(go) to Talifornia?"

It sounds so peaceful...

...to lie down in green pastures.
To walk beside still waters.

But my favorite part of this Psalm---a line which unfortunately wasn't captured on this quick 'Photo Booth' video during Ryan's lunch break today --is when Maya walks around the house saying...

'He restores my pole.'

It's my favorite line of that Psalm. The words are so hopeful, so beautiful and rich.
And Maya's translation of it just makes me smile.

Kindergartener: "Mrs. Corbin...."

"...my Grandpa died."

Me: (stunned, concerned) "did this just happen? I'm so sorry."

Kindergartener: "It's okay, Mrs. Corbin. I still have another one."

Another Kindergartener: "Yeah. It's okay, Mrs. Corbin. Don't worry. I got a new scooter."

"Happy beef-er"...

...Maya very lovingly wished her Uncle Andy on the phone tonight.

We're happy to be home today. I love snow. Especially when it gives me an extra long weekend.

Today at breakfast...
Maya: Sheep who?
Me: What, Maya? What do you mean? Sheep?
Maya: (patiently explaining again) Momma. Knock-Knock.
Me: Oh!! Who's there?
Maya: Sheep.
Me: Sheep who?
Maya: Cow.

She learned this new concept of 'knock-knock' jokes from her friend Ryan (also known as "Ry-rhine"), but I haven't heard one in a few days so I wasn't expecting it.

Maya: Door. Knock-knock.
Me: Who's there?
Maya: No-No
Me: No-no who?
Maya: No-AH! (erupting into giggles)

Later...at lunch.

Me: Maya, you should tell Daddy one of your "Knock-knock jokes"
Maya: knock-knock
Daddy: who's there?
Maya: Ry-rhine
Daddy: Ryan who?
Maya: No-AH! (running away to hide her proud smile by burying her head in the couch cushions)

Me: "are you my cuddle bear?"

Maya: "mm, hm....hold chee [hold me]" (snuggling her face into my shoulder, squeezing me tighter, occasionally offering gentle pats on my back)

This picture is a few months old, but it captures one of my very favorite feelings.
Ryan and I have been covered in kisses and requests for hugs and kisses this week.
Can I somehow make this part last forever?

it's not just the sepia...

...she's really *that* beautiful and delightful and surprising and funny.
